European Union MP Nicolaus Fest while on his visit to Srinagar on Wednesday criticised Indian government over disallowing opposition leader for visiting Jammu and Kashmir.

The EU MPs were addressing the media in Srinagar to share their experience and assess the ground situation in Kashmir upon invitation from the Indian government.

The visiting delegation said that they do not want to interfere into internal matters of India. However, they said the terror was a universal problem and they support India in its efforts to eliminate it. The team added that the aim of the visit was to see how help and support can be offered to improve the situation in the region.

Nicolaus Fest, one of the members of the team, insisted that the Centre allow opposition leaders to visit the state. “I think if you let in European Union parliamentarians, you should also let in opposition politicians from India. So there is some kind of disbalance, the government should somehow address it.”

The interaction was hosted in posh Grand Lalit Palace that overlooks the Dal lake. The members of the civil society and the civilians were escorted by the security forces.

The EU MPs also took Shikara rides in the lake and had lunch with the Indian Army in Badami Bagh Cantonment in Srinagar.
