Thiruvananthapuram, March 17 (IANS) Even as no fresh corona positive case was reported on Tuesday in Kerala, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said a committee of experts will be appointed to advise the state government on how to go forward.

“The good news is that there has been no fresh positive cases and the total number of positive cases remains at 24. Today 17,743 people are under observation in homes, while 268 of them are in hospitals. An expert committee is needed so that the government can take advise from experts,” said Vijayan.

“We have now decided to seek the help of medical students in our state who will launch a campaign under the guidance of the Indian Medical Association. Special care is required for all those who are above 60 years,” said Vijayan.

He said the State Level Bankers Committee has decided to take steps to see how best they can come to the relief of all those who have taken loans.

Union Minister of State for External Affairs V. Muraleedharan, who had visited the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) on Saturday and attended a meeting there, had to home-quarantine himslef in Delhi after a doctor in the institute turned corona positive. There are 76 more officials who are now under isolation.

He wrote in his Facebook that as a matter of abundant caution, even though he has tested negative, he is remaining in self-isolation at his official residence in Delhi.

In a related development, Additional Director General of police B. Sandhya held an awareness class for auto-rickshaw drivers on how to tackle the spread of coronavirus in the state capital city.

Several Kerala students appeared on TV channels live from the Kuala Lumpur airport after reaching there from Philippines and were told that all the flights to India had been cancelled.

“We are unfortunately stuck at the airport, after reaching from Philippines. Now we cannot go back as they have banned entry and we can’t reach our home country also as we are now told the flight that we booked has been cancelled. Someone please help us,” said a girl student.

Back home in Kerala, the Congress-led opposition has repeatedly demanded keeping state-owned liquor and beer outlets shut to avoid crowding. However, Excise Minister T.P. Ramakrishnan said the department has come out with a new advisory that no more than 30 people should stand in queue at a time and all of them should maintain a safe distance from one another.

The department has supplied masks and sanitizers to its counter staff and will be opening more counters to avoid queues.
