Facebook tragedy: Girl kills self over morphed pictures

A 21-year-old in Tamil Nadu has hanged herself six days after morphed and obscene pictures of her were posted on Facebook. The victim, Vinupriya, a graduate in Chemistry was found dead yesterday in Salem, where she lived with her parents.

A suicide note has been recovered which reveals the inaction by police and the fact that no steps were taken to block or remove the pictures even after repeated complaints. It also suggests that her parents did not believe that she had not sent nude pictures of herself to whoever posted them online.  The letter says, “Believe me for a second please, and, “There is no point in living if my father and mother do not trust me.”

The victim’s family is devastated and has accused the police of not acting on their repeated complaints.
“We’ve filed a case of abetting suicide and have blocked the Facebook page which carried her pictures” said Amit Kumar, a senior police officer handling the case. He added that Facebook has been asked to share details of the person who posted the obscene photos.

Her body was sent to the Salem General Hospital for post mortem and results are awaited. It was only after the victim’s family protested in front of the GH against the police, the cops kicked into action and filed a case beginning investigation into the matter.
