COVID-19 in Kerala: Despite no symptoms, 2 corona patients tests positive after 40 days

Viral claim on social media suggests coronavirus dies in 12 hours thus, the 14-hour ‘Janta curfew’ will break the cycle of infection. While social distancing is extremely important to flatten the curve, the viral claim is false.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has encouraged people to stay home between the hours of 7 am and 9 pm on Sunday, as well as doing five minutes of clapping for gratitude to the health workers during the observances of the curfew.

Many BJP leaders including TN BJP Chief has tweeted the unscientific theory that Coronavirus cannot survive more than 12-14 hours.

The Logic behind Janata Curfew…As Corona Virus life at one place is 8 – 12 hours and Janata Curfew is for 14 hrs…. so for 12 hours virus will not get in touch with the human body, this will kill the virus.” posted a user on Instagram, check here.

Investigation

The Covid-19 virus, according to a new study, sticks around on plastic surfaces for up to three days, but for a shorter period on metals.

Influenza viruses remain infectious for up to 48 hours after landing on nonporous surfaces such as stainless steel or plastic such as that in computer keyboards, but that seems like the outer limit: A 2011 study found that the H1N1 flu virus that caused the 2009 pandemic could be recovered from glass, stainless steel, plastic, and aluminum for up to 48 hours, but most was gone after nine hours. Both cold and flu viruses survive for much shorter times on porous surfaces such as cloth, paper, or tissue, with very little infectious virus remaining after four hours.

As per World Health Organization (WHO), “It is not certain how long the virus that causes COVID-19 survives on surfaces, but it seems to behave like other coronaviruses. Studies suggest that coronaviruses (including preliminary information on the COVID-19 virus) may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days. This may vary under different conditions (e.g. type of surface, temperature or humidity of the environment).

If you think a surface may be infected, clean it with simple disinfectant to kill the virus and protect yourself and others. Clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose.”

Verdict: The viral claim of 12 hours break and clapping will kill the virus is false, Social Distancing is important to stop the spread of COVID-19.
