Fashion mantra for plus-size women

Styling tips for curvy women

New Delhi: It is a myth that plus-size women should wear loose or baggy clothes. Shapeless garments should be avoided in favour of fitted clothing that can accentuate your best features, say experts.

Devangi Parekh, Creative Director, Aza Fashions, and Rishi Vasudev, Head of Flipkart Fashion, share some fashion tips for plus-size women.

* It’s important to find outfits that flatter your specific shape. For example, empire waistlines work well for bottom heavy shapes, but if your weight is concentrated around the stomach area, straighter fits work better. Most importantly, make sure the garments are tailored to your size and don’t crease.

* There are no rules when it comes to colour – wearing only dark shades or black is an outdated concept. Pick colours that look good with your skin tone. This season is all about pastel shades like baby pink, mint green, and lavender. When opting for prints, select a print (ideally vertical) in proportion to body size – it should be neither too big nor too small.

* V-necks and silhouettes that are fitted on top with full or 3/4th length sleeves can be very flattering. For festive celebrations and weddings, a fitted, long sleeved anarkali or a sari with a blouse that has 3/4th sleeves are great options.

* Lace as a fabric looks really nice in plus sizes and works well for both Indian and western clothes. A gown with lace sleeves or an Indo-western silhouette with a lace cape or jacket is both elegant and stylish.

* In terms of current trends, capes and drapes are very much on and can be worn in various ways, including a draped inner dress with a cape; a fitted anarkali with cape style sleeves or an attached cape-like overlay on the top half; or a sari with a cape style jacket.

* Ruffles and statement sleeves are ruling runways worldwide, and can be worn in a way that flatters your body type. For example, a fitted dress with smaller ruffles on the top half, an anarkali with flared, elbow-length sleeves, or a lehenga that has ruffles at the bottom of the skirt.

* Go for the right kind of kurtas. While choosing kurtas this festive season, choose flowy kurtas rather than body hugging kurtas for that royal look. And if your lower body is slightly heavy, you can always go for the long kurtas to look elegant yet be comfortable.

* While picking saris, go for light fabrics like chiffon, crepe and georgette. Avoid big prints, and always drape the sari neatly. Avoid too many pleats which add volume.

* Avoid neckpieces, go for earrings instead. Every outfit needs to be accessorised well when it comes to the festive season. Ensure that you do not go for the heavy neckpieces. Instead, go for statement earrings.

* Wear the right footwear. While wearing a sari, stilettos are the safest bet. They go well even with long kurtas and anarkali dresses. The best thing about stilettos is that they add length to your body and make you look more in shape.
