Final Year Exam UGC Guidelines 2020: Supreme Court heard the batch of pleas seeking the cancellation of the final year examinations and indeed challenging the UGC guidelines that made students take the final year examinations compulsory today, on August 10, 2020. The verdict was likely to be out today however, the apex court has now sought clarification if the Disaster Management Act can override the UGC’s notification.

Now, SC will hear the UGC case next on August 14, 2020.

The pleas were filed challenging the commissions to move to conduct university final year exams till September 30, 2020.

In its circular issued on July 6, the UGC directed the universities to hold the final year or last semester examinations by September 30, 2020. The UGC also gave instructions to conduct examinations online or offline or jointly in both online and offline mediums. Meanwhile, 31 students from different universities across the country together filed a petition in the Supreme Court.

The petition filed in the Supreme Court for final year or semester examinations was heard on 31 July. During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who was representing the UGC and the government asked to file an affidavit by August 7, 2020, to keep the home ministry concerned.

Meanwhile, during the hearing of the case, advocate Singhvi, appearing for the students, had said that there are many universities across the country which do not have the necessary IT infrastructure to conduct the examinations online. On the other hand, it is not possible to physically conduct examinations in this round of Covid-19.

Students have demanded that the final year or semester examinations in universities or other higher education institutions should be cancelled and students’ results should be evaluated based on their internal assessment or past performance.
