Former Raebareli MLA Akhilesh Singh passed away on Tuesday morning after a prolonged illness. Popular as ‘Robinhood of Rae Bareli’, Singh was battling cancer for the past few years and breathed his last at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) Hospital today morning, in Lucknow.
As per the reports, the body will be taken to his village Lalupur in Rae Bareli for the cremation which will be done later in the day.
Akhilesh started his political journey with Congress but, was expelled from the party after the Rakesh Pandey murder case. Though he was known for his criminal antecedents with several FIRs registered against him, yet in his constituency he had a huge support.
Akhilesh won five assembly elections on the trot from 1993 to 2012, three of them on a Congress ticket (1993, 1996 and 2002) while winning once as an independent (2007) and Peace party candidate in 2012.
His failing health led to his daughter Aditi Singh taking over the mantle in 2017 and she retained her father’s Sadar seat with a margin of 89,163 votes.
