World Cup winning cricketer Gautam Gambhir is joined the Bharatiya Janata party on Friday, March 22 in presence of Arun Jaitley, Ravi Shankar Prasad. This comes less than a week after he said that he remains undecided on taking the decision to jump into politics.

“All my life I have only played cricket and and my family needs to be convinced. I have heard from people that full time politics can change people. But I have two little daughters. I need to spend time with them. I have also heard rumours but right now, I will be doing commentary for during the Indian Premier League,” the ex-cricketer had earlier said.

Gambhir joins a long list of Indian cricketers who joined politics. Kirti Azad, Mohammad Azharuddin, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Mohammad Kaif, Praveen Kumar, Vinod Kambli and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi are the Indian cricket stars to have previously done the same.

Gambhir last represented India in a Test match in 2016. He has not featured in a limited overs encounter since 2012.

The Delhi-based southpaw was instrumental in helping India win T20I World Cup 2007 and World Cup 2011. He played solid knocks in both the finals.

He has also led Kolkata to two IPL titles. This season, he was leading the Delhi Daredevils, but after repeated losses, he stepped down as captain from the side. Since then, he has not featured in IPL matches too.

Gambhir had retired from all formats of cricket in December last year. He had also posted an emotional video on his social site account announcing his retirement. Gambhir played his last competitive match against Andhra in the Ranji Trophy at Feroz Shah Kotla Ground.
