Freedom of Press Ranking: More than half of the world’s population will vote in 2024, but the free press that provides them with information is under threat.

Reporters Without Borders’ 2024 World Press Freedom Index found a worrying trend in one of its five indicators.

According to the 2024 report, governments and political authorities fail to provide a conducive environment for journalism.

Additionally, the public cannot access “reliable, independent, and diverse news and information”.

As a result, RSF sees a decline in support and respect for media autonomy and an increase in pressure from the state or other political actors.

The group, however, states that the international community lacks the political will to enforce the principle of protecting journalists.

More than 100 Palestinian reporters have been killed by the Israel Defence Forces in Gaza.

Due to a lack of regulations, the group is also concerned about generative AI being used in disinformation campaigns, such as deepfakes.

What country has the most freedom of the press?

Almost all of the top five countries are located in the Nordic region, with Norway leading the pack. Denmark and Sweden follow.

There are five more European countries in the top ten, including the Netherlands and Finland.

Vietnam, China and North Korea were displaced from the bottom of the list by Afghanistan, Syria and Eritrea, whose political rankings plummeted in the latest World Press Freedom Index.

It is despite the fact that China detains more journalists than any other country and Vietnam systematically locks up journalists who speak out on social media.

How does the US rank in terms of freedom of the press?

In 2024, the US dropped 10 spots in the ranking from the year before, once considered a model for freedom of expression.

According to the US fact file, four of the five indicators decreased significantly; the security indicator increased nearly four points.
