Gangaur 2023: Gangaur is one of the most prominent and well-known festivals in India. It is an 18-day festival honouring Lord Shiva’s consort, Goddess Gauri. Gangaur commences the day following Holi and continues until the third day of Chaitra Shukla Paksha. During the 16-day Gangaur Teej celebrations, natives organise numerous cultural events across all the cities and communities. In various regions of Rajasthan where Parvati is known as Teej Mata, women visit one another and exchange gifts and sweets. The atmosphere is festive, and the women are attired in flamboyant attire. Gangaur 2023: Rituals

Gangaur Puja begins with the retrieval of ashes from the Holika Dahan, followed by the interment of barley and wheat seeds. These seedlings are watered every day until they germinate.

Women fashion colourful statues of the goddess Gauri out of wood or clay. Goddess Gauri is adored daily with the uttermost devotion and reverence.

At the puja, traditional folk songs are chanted. On the final day of the Gangaur puja, the observer of Gangaur Vrat and other married women worship the idols.

In the evening, the idol is immersed in the nearest body of water.

Women who observe Gangaur Vrat consume a single meal per day.

Major Highlights of the 2023 Gangaur Festival

On the day of Gangaur, both married and single women perform the Gangaur Pooja. This pooja is performed to seek the blessings of the gods and the prosperity of married couples. Married women wish their spouses a long life, good health, and happiness. Unmarried women pray for a suitable life partner. Here are the festival’s most significant highlights or attractions.

Sinjara

The day before Gangaur, married women receive gifts from their parents that include jewellery, clothing, and treats such as ghevar. This is known as sinjara. At home, many delicious and savoury treats are prepared. Women congregate to sing songs and decorate their hands with henna.

Making Terracotta Idols

Ashes from Holika Dahan are gathered and transported home. It is combined with clay to create Gangaur and Isar Ji statues. In some locations, wooden representations of the deity are venerated. These figurines or idols are set in a basket brimming with flowers and grass to represent a prosperous harvest.

Pooja Preparations

Married women prepare for the puja by donning their wedding attire or traditional attire, putting on heavy jewellery, applying henna to their hands, and applying cosmetics.

Gangaur Puja

As part of the elaborate Gangaur Puja, the women recline in a circle in front of the idols of Gaur and Isarji. The narrative of Gangaur, which is regarded as extremely fortunate, is recounted. Using both hands to hold doob or vegetation, they recite traditional Gangaur prayers. The chants “gaur gaur gomti, isar puje parvati” resonate and generate a positive atmosphere. Sweets such as Ghevar are offered to the god. This day, women observe a fast.
