According to Christian tradition, Easter Sunday is a happy celebration of the resurrection of Christ. For many non-Christians, this is also a happy time, marked by colour and painted eggs, Easter bunnies and many sweets. But just before Easter falls on a gloomy day i.e., Good Friday. Good Friday marks the crucifixion and death of Christ. On this day, many Christians reflect on Christ’s sacrifice for his sins.

Good Friday is one of the most important days of Holy Week, which begins on Palm Sunday and ends on Easter.

Good Friday 2020 falls on April 10 followed by Jesus’s resurrection which is celebrated as Easter by Christians. This year, Easter will be observed on April 12.

What is Good Friday?

Good Friday is to commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. For many Christian believers including Christians, Lutheran Church, Anglicans and Methodists, this day is a solemn reflection. Good Friday takes place on Friday before Easter, so its date changes every year.

Many Christians observe this day through prayer, and some Christians fast. In Roman Catholic tradition, believers commemorate Good Friday by praying the station of the cross and reciting prayers.

Good Friday is a time to commemorate the suffering and dying of Jesus before the resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday. It’s a reminder of the sacrifice made by Christ to atone for humanity’s sins.

Significance and tradition: Good Friday 2020

Good Friday marks the beginning of the end of Holy Week, which is the last week of Lent period. The last three days of Holy Week are called “Triduum” or “three days” to commemorate Jesus’ trial, death and resurrection. Triduum starts on the evening of Holy Thursday or “Maundy Thursday” (the day before Good Friday) and ends on the evening of Easter Sunday.

According to beliefs, Jesus sacrifices and crucify himself to save us from sins. Jesus was beaten and mocked by Roman soldiers and was crucified on Calvary mountain. Easter takes place after 40 days of lent, during which they avoid eating non-vegetarian food. It begins on Ash Wednesday and ends approximately six weeks before Easter Sunday.

Good Friday is a bleak day for penance and remembering Jesus’s sacrifice. It’s the darkness of Good Friday that makes believers to feel joyful about the resurrection on Easter Sunday.
