The State Urban Development Minister Madan Kaushik in a meeting with senior officials on Friday said that the state government will reverse an earlier order which was passed by Harish Rawat government in 2016 terming the Ganga at Har Ki Pauri as an escape channel and not a river.

The name is likely to be changed to Dev Dhara.

Kaushik said that the government was ready to move SC and if necessary, can also bring in an ordinance to name the Ganga as Dev Dhara. The announcement was welcomed by priests of the Ganga Sabha and other seers in Haridwar who had been protesting the 2016 order.

The matter gained political traction a few days ago, when for his government’s mistake and put the onus on the present government for “rectifying” it, adding that “if the BJP government fails to do it, Congress government will do it in 2022.

There is another factor which is contributing to the government’s decision was a PIL filed in the Nainital High Court by Anmol Vashishth, a priest at Haridwar. He had on May 16 submitted a presentation to the CM, requesting that the 2016 order be revoked.

The court on its verdict on June 17, said that the government may take a decision on Vashishth’s presentation with utmost expedition.
