New Delhi: The Ministry of Human Resources Development has denied Jamia Millia Islamia’s request to confer Shah Rukh Khan with an honorary doctorate, citing that it would not be in order as he had already received a similar degree from the Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU).

The University wanted to award the Bollywood star for his extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema and culture.

“Whenever there is a recommendation of the Executive Committee seeking approval for awarding an honorary doctorate, we check whether the same person has been awarded the same honour by another central university; and whether there is any conflict of interest,” Jamia PRO Ahmed Azeem was quoted as responding to the question asking the reason by The Indian Express.

There is no official ban on the practice of people receiving multiple honorary degrees. Bharat Ratna awardee CNR Rao, MS Swaminathan are among the ones to have received honorary degrees on multiple occasions. While Rao was awarded honorary degrees from University of Kashmir and IIT Kanpur, Swaminathan was awarded from Punjab Univeristy and IIT Kanpur, revealed The Indian Express.

Khan was a post-graduate student at Jamia’s AJK Mass Communication Research Centre during 1988-90.
