Govt likely to add 10,000 more PG medical seats in 2020-21: Reports

As per media reports, in an attempt to improve the availability of specialists all over the country, the government may significantly add 10,000 medical seats to the new academic year.

NEW DELHI: The government is set to add 10,000 new postgraduate medical seats from the new academic session this year. As per media reports, in an attempt to improve the availability of specialists all over the country, the government may significantly add 10,000 medical seats to the new academic year.

According to the District Hospital Medical Residency Scheme passed by the Medical Council of India (MCI), it is mandatory for PG students to complete three months of residency in a district hospital.

Earlier, few states had opposed the Residential Programme that transferring medical students to district hospitals will affect the hospitals attached to medical colleges as if it decreases the availability of doctors.

Currently, there are around 23,000 PG and 68,500 undergraduate medical seats in both government and private colleges all over the country.

Major Medical Crisis in India

India is facing a tough time for having a huge shortage of specialists doctors. In the present tenure, where so many non-communicable and lifestyle diseases like cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular and kidney issues, doctors are needed.

As per the Health Ministry Data, there is a shortfall of 82 percent of specialists in the country. There aren’t enough surgeons, physicians and pediatricians. According to the reports, in states like Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, there is a 90 percent shortage of specialists.
