The central government on Friday stripped off the Special Protection Group security to the Gandhian family. As per the reports, only Prime Minister Narendra Modi will get SPG security now on.

Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will now be guarded by CRPF Z+ security cover instead.

The decision was taken at a high-level meeting of the Home Ministry today. The move came after multiple security agencies carried out a threat perception assessment and found there was no direct threat to them.

A senior government official said a security review was done and it was found that the Gandhi family did not cooperate and impede smooth functioning SPG.

From 2015 onwards, Gandhi, currently MP from Wayanad, Kerala, did not use the SPG approved bulletproof vehicles on 1,892 occasions while travelling in Delhi, that accounts for one violation per day, the official said.

“From the years 2005-2014, he travelled in non-bullet resistant vehicles during 18 visits to different parts of the country and 247 occasions where he violated the rules to travel outside Delhi,” the official said.

In August, the government had stripped of the SPG cover given to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He is now given Z-plus category security cover.
