The GST Amendment Bill-2020 was passed during the one-day session in the Delhi assembly on Monday to keep the goods and services tax (GST) rate at a maximum of 10%.

After the Assembly session, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said, “We support GST.” “The tax rate under GST should be 10% and 5%. If the tax rate under GST increases, inflation will increase and it will affect the general public”, he added.

“GST is a better tax reform process. We support it, however, we have a problem with the process of implementing it. By increasing the tax rate, people do not pay taxes. By reducing the rate, people pay. We have reduced the tax rate in Delhi, which we have been benefited from”, Kejriwal added further.

GST Council has fixed the tax rate at 5, 12 18, 28%, however a proposal has been passed to keep the tax rate at a maximum of 10% in the Delhi Legislative Assembly.

It is an indirect tax which has replaced many indirect taxes in India such as the excise duty, VAT, services tax, etc. The Goods and Service Tax Act was passed in the Parliament on 29th March 2017 and came into effect on 1st July 2017. Goods and Services Tax Law in India is a comprehensive, multi-stage, destination-based taxt hat is levied on every value addition. GST is a single domestic indirect tax law for the entire country.
