Gujarat: Girls stripped for period check; Four college employees arrested

All of them have been charged under the following sections: section 341(wrongful restraint), 348 (Wrongful confinement to extort confession) and 343 (wrongful confinement) of the Indian Penal Code.

Bhuj: Four employees, including the principal, of the Shree Sahjanand Girls Institute in Bhuj, were arrested on Monday for allegedly forcing girls to strip to confirm allegations of being in their period.

The arrested lot includes principal Rita Raniga (38), coordinator Anita Chohan (49), hostel supervisor Ramila Hirani (29) and peon Nayna Gorasia (40).

All of them have been charged under the following sections: section 341(wrongful restraint), 348 (Wrongful confinement to extort confession) and 343 (wrongful confinement) of the Indian Penal Code.

All the accused were taken into custody by special investigation team (SIT) formed by the Kutch police were produced in court which they sent to police custody till February 19.

A team of the National Commission for Women (NCW) investigated the matter and met the girls at the college campus.

An inquiry committee led by Dr Rajul L Desai, (member, NCW), along with advocate Malshree Gadhvi, DLSA, discussed with 44 girls (out of 68) about it and they gave assurances to the girl folk that they will dissuade the administration from following such inhuman practices.

Rahul L Desai reiterates, “The rules of the hostel are in violation of the girls’ right to education, which has been guaranteed to them by the constitution, had said after meeting the girls.”

The incident had triggered outrage across the country against practising this tactic in confirming the menstrual status of woman
