Puthandu is known as Tamil New Year. Puthandu is celebrated every year on 14 April. It is celebrated as the first day of the Tamil New Year according to the Hindu lunar calendar.
Puthandu is celebrated with great pomp by the Tamils around the world, it is also celebrated in Sri Lanka with great pomp. On this day people prepare delicious dishes and celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm with their family.
The Tamil New Year is celebrated in South India on the first day of the Tamil month of Chithirai. This is also known as Puthuvarusham. On this occasion, people clean their house, prepare a tray filled with fruits, flowers and auspicious items and decorate the house.
On this day people go to temples and pray to welcome the new year. They call each other ‘Puthandu Vazthukal’ (Happy New Year).
