Happy Teacher's Day 2020: Top 3 inspiring Guru-Shishya duo of India

Teachers’ Day is observed on September 5 every year. The day commemorates the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, an exemplary teacher and the second president of India. Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was a philosopher, scholar and politician who dedicated his life towards education and the youth of the country.

Dr. S. Radhakrishnan was one of the most renowned writers in contemporary India. He made significant contributions to a variety of subjects starting from theoretical, theological, moral, instructive, communal, and enlightening subjects. He wrote several articles to many recognised journals which are of great importance.

On the occasion of Teacher’s Day, here are the top 3 Guru-Shishya duos of India:

Nambiar and PT Usha

The first-ever winner of the famous Dronacharya Award, O. M. Nambiar was the one who spotted the talent in P. T. Usha. Nambiar, an Air Force Officer, dreamt of representing India in athletics. But when things did not pan out the way he wanted, instead of giving up, Nambia turned to coaching.

In 1976, Nambiar spotted the 12-year old Usha at a school in Payyoli and began the journey of the ‘Payyoli Express’. P. T. Usha went on to become the “Queen of Indian Track and Field”.  Nambiar won the first Dronacharya Award for the best coach in 1995.

Ramakant Achrekar and Sachin Tendulkar

The duo is well-known across the globe. The name ‘Sachin Tendulkar’ itself is self-explanatory. Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar’s emotional outburst during his brief farewell speech while mentioning his guruRamakant Achrekar’s name said it all.

Ramakant Achrekar had a unique way of coaching this exceptional talent. He used to place a one-rupee coin on the top of the stumps, which the bowler would get if he dismisses Sachin. If Sachin could go an entire session without getting out, he would get the coin. Sachin has 13 such coins in his collection.

Birju Maharaj and Madhuri Dixit Nene

For legendary Kathak exponent Birju Maharaj, actor Madhuri Dixit is the best dancer in Bollywood after veteran star Waheeda Rehman. Pandit Birju Maharaj has earlier choreographed the actress for many of her movies like ‘Devdas’ and ‘Dil to Pagal Hai’. The mentor-disciple duo also shares a close family bond and Panditji even teaches Madhuri’s children the tabla.
