The origin, history, and founder of the Day are not exactly known. There is no mention of the year since this Day has been celebrated. However, they have been in existence since the 1920s.

Abe Saperstein established the Harlem Globetrotters on January 7, 1927. Hence, the celebration Day falls on the same date every year. It began as the Savoy Big Five which was a basketball team with an African American team of players.

The team is a combination of the most outstanding athleticism, theater, and comedy personnel to ever enter the game. Harlem Globetrotters were known for their on-court antics which led them to play 26,000 exhibition games in 122 countries and territories.

More than 450 live events are played by the team worldwide each year. Currently, Herschend Family Entertainment owns the team.

The team invented the slam dunk, fast break, forward and point guard positions, and the first four-point shot set 30 feet from the hoop incorporated into basketball today.

  • Launched Chamberlain’s career

After leaving the University of Kansas, Wilt Chamberlain, one of the greatest players in basketball history, started at the Harlem Globetrotters in 1958.
