Heinrich Klaasen’s retention doubtful: IPL teams that can buy SRH star in 2026 auction

Sunrisers Hyderabad may release Heinrich Klaasen before the IPL 2026 auction after his poor form and retirement, giving teams like RR, KKR, and CSK a chance to sign him.

Heinrich Klaasen IPL 2026 auction: In the IPL 2025 season, Heinrich Klaasen was the costliest retention for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at a massive price of ₹23 crore. He had a decent season for them, but things have changed quickly in the past few months.

The South African wicketkeeper-batter recently retired from international cricket and did not perform well in leagues like Major League Cricket (MLC) and The Hundred. Because of this, many have started to question his form and fitness. Reports now claim that SRH might release Klaasen before the auction.

Rajasthan Royals Could Target Klaasen

Rajasthan Royals (RR) had a disappointing IPL 2025 campaign, and one of their biggest weaknesses was finishing matches. Their lower middle order failed to deliver under pressure. Players like Shimron Hetmyer and Dhruv Jurel could not finish important chases. Because of this RR will be looking for a strong finisher who can hit big in the last overs.

Heinrich Klaasen looks like the perfect player for that job. He can bat at number five or six and change the game with his quick scoring and fearless hitting.

RR is also expected to release Shimron Hetmyer, who was retained earlier for ₹12 crore. This will free up a lot of money in their budget and the team could use it to go after Klaasen in the auction. There are also chances of a few more expensive players being released, which could allow RR to buy Klaasen without worrying about spending too much.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) did not have a good IPL 2025 season after winning the title in 2024. The team is planning to make major changes for the next season. They have already changed their head coach and might release several underperforming players, including Venkatesh Iyer, who was bought for ₹23.75 crore.

This means KKR will have a big budget for the upcoming auction, giving them a chance to buy some top players. If Klaasen enters the auction, KKR could bid for him with full energy. He can bring stability and strength to their middle order, which lacked consistency last season. Andre Russell is nearing the end of his career, so Klaasen could also become his long-term replacement as a reliable finisher.

Klaasen can also keep wickets, which will be helpful for KKR since they are likely to release both Quinton de Kock and Rahmanullah Gurbaz after a poor season. His addition would balance their batting and wicketkeeping roles perfectly.

Chennai Super Kings on Klaasen

Five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had one of their worst seasons in 2025, finishing at the bottom of the table. The team is now planning a complete rebuild. Ravichandran Ashwin has already retired, freeing up ₹10 crore, and several senior players who did not perform well are expected to be released.

CSK will therefore enter the auction with a large purse. Their main goal will be to find a player who can hit hard in the middle and lower order. Last season, CSK’s batting struggled to accelerate in the final overs. Having Heinrich Klaasen could solve that problem.

Another reason Klaasen would suit CSK is his skill against spin bowlers. He reads spin very well, which is important because CSK’s home ground in Chennai usually helps spinners. His strong record against spin makes him a great option for home games.
