HK’s protest-battered metro station to reopen

Hong Kong, Dec 20 (IANS) A metro station which closed last month, after falling victim to vandalism and arson attacks during major clashes between Hong Kong pprotesters and police at the Chinese University campus, will reopen on Saturday, the city’s rail operator said on Friday.

But the University station in Sha Tin will still have limited services, with some exits and display screens out of action, as MTR Corporation staff need more time to return the East Rail line stop to normal, reports the South China Morning Post newspaper.

The MTR Corporation said last month that the station was so badly damaged that the restoration was no different to rebuilding it.

During the police-protester clashes on the nearby Chinese University campus in November, the station’s glass was shattered, communication facilities were destroyed, equipment was taken from the control room, and ticketing machines and turnstiles were trashed.

The anti-government protesters accuse the rail operator of colluding with police during the force’s clearance operations during the ongoing unrest since June.
