On social media, there has been a desperate cry of users over lack of blood, hospital pleas and mounting requirements are anything to be believed, the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdown has left those requiring blood in the lurch.
A boy named Shivam, his father, an inpatient at cancer care hospital was in dire need of blood on Monday, he had to pull his contacts, plead for help on social media and do community outreach to ensure he had enough donors. His blood requirement though did get fulfilled on Thursday, he cannot forget the ordeal.
“We have posted social media messages,” Shivam recalled. “I have received multiple calls. Some (donors) wanted me to pick them up and drop them (back home) as there was no transport. They feared police action if they were to come on their own.”
One of the donors was on his way and little did he know he was caught by the police and they seized his bike despite his explanations that he was going to donate blood for a patient in an emergency.
“The donor offered to ring my father’s doctor. The police still asked for a selfie and some documents before letting him go,” Shivam recalled.
So bad is the impact of the lockdown on blood banks that they might run dry in a week.
The doctor however in their statement said, the hospital is willing to send the signed copy of the permission for willing donors who can show it to the police. “They have to ring us, and we will then resort to communication thereafter. Right now, we don’t even have volunteers,” he said.
