How to Make ChatGPT Continue Writing: Free ChatGPT users can generate responses of up to 4096 tokens, or approximately 3000 words. In practice, you may receive responses that are substantially shorter, with the AI tool generating less than 600 words or halting generation in the middle of a paragraph.

You can circumvent the aforementioned restriction by subscribing to ChatGPT+, which provides support for twice as many words as the free OpenAI account.

To force ChatGPT to continue, you can respond with keywords such as “Continue writing”, “Go on”, or “Finish answer” or specify the section of text from which it should continue. To generate longer responses, you can request that ChatGPT divide its responses into pages or chapters, or construct an outline for a topic and prompt it to generate text for various subheadings each time.

ChatGPT is a useful instrument for extracting information on a wide variety of topics, but like all technologies, it has its limitations. When generating comprehensive-textual content, the AI tool can produce truncated responses in which ChatGPT stops adding content in the middle of a paragraph.

If you’re curious as to why this might be occurring and want to learn how to make ChatGPT continue composing, the following post should assist you in doing so easily.

What is the utmost length of a ChatGPT response?

Text is processed by ChatGPT models using tokens, which are frequent sequences of characters encountered in text. The AI chatbot currently accepts a maximum of 8,192 tokens on GPT-4 and 4,096 tokens on GPT-3.5; the latter should be considered since GPT-3.5 is still widely used. This limit pertains to both your input and ChatGPT’s response, so the total number of tokens for a query and its answer on GPT-3.5 should not exceed 4,096.

OpenAI states that as a general rule, 1 token corresponds to approximately 4 characters of text, which can comprise three-quarters of a word. 100 tokens correspond roughly to 75 words, so a higher limit of 4096 characters should include a maximum of approximately 3072 words. When ChatGPT’s token limit is exceeded, the response you receive may be abbreviated or cut off in the middle.

While 3000 words may still be sufficient for most practical applications, the majority of ChatGPT responses do not exceed 600 words or 730 tokens. During our testing, ChatGPT would either produce a significantly reduced response or cease generating text in the middle of a paragraph.

Another aspect of this tokenized system to consider is that the amount of tokens consumed depends on the words that are employed. In an ideal world, simpler and more common English terms would require fewer tokens than more nuanced or less popular words. This means that you may receive brief or abbreviated responses when using a foreign language or requesting that ChatGPT respond in more complex language.

There is an excellent reason why OpenAI restricts your responses. When a single response is generated by an AI tool, it requires a significant amount of computational power, which costs real money, and the cost increases as the duration of the generated content increases. Consider millions of additional users of ChatGPT and how much it would cost OpenAI to generate their responses.

Make ChatGPT continue writing a response [2 ways]

If ChatGPT’s responses are cut off in the middle of the response, it is possible to make the AI tool construct a complete response.

Simply request ChatGPT to resume the response in Method 1.

Simply requesting that ChatGPT continue writing is the simplest method to have it do so. When a response from ChatGPT is interrupted in the midst of a sentence, you can respond with one of the following options.

  • Continue to write
  • Please proceed
  • Go on Keep moving
  • Complete your answer
  • Continue from your previous response
  • Continue from the preceding paragraph.

The quality of subsequent responses will get better when you’re more specific about what you want ChatGPT to continue. Here’s an example: Can you continue writing from the last line of the fourth paragraph from your previous response?

If you’re using ChatGPT to write codes for you, you can use the following prompt to make it continue writing code from where it stopped: Print the rest of the code without reprinting what you've just showed me.

If you’re unable to make ChatGPT follow your “continue” queries with the right response, you can enter the following text (courtesy: Reddit) inside ChatGPT to continue writing from where it left off:

From now on when I say "continue" you must revisit the last sample of code you gave. Look at the last line of the code and continue the code from there. Do not start from the beginning of the code.

Now, every time you type “Continue“, ChatGPT will respond with the next sets of codes.

Method 2: Generate a response from specific text

Method 1 should work for the majority of responses you receive from ChatGPT; however, to ensure you receive pertinent responses, you can specify the text from which you want the AI tool to continue composing. To do so, copy the last line of text shared by ChatGPT in the previous response and paste it into the next prompt.

Can you continue from "<copied text>" from your previous response to generate the next part of your response?

This should help you get improved responses when compared to method 1.

If ChatGPT replies with the same text as your previous response or cannot provide any response, you can use this prompt instead:

This is how you left the answer - "<copied text>". Can you continue from this exact spot without repeating any of what you've shown me already or is copied here?

This should assist ChatGPT better comprehend your question and provide a response that is not identical to the previous one.

Prevent Response Cutoff in ChatGPT [3 ways]

You can also plan and prevent the response cutoffs. It’s easy. Here are three ways to achieve this.

Method 1: Split responses into pages or chapters

If you find ChatGPT’s continued response to be irritating, you can make the task simpler by dividing its responses into numerous pages or chapters. You can automate your input in the following manner:

Create an essay on "Historical perspective on ecological problems" and divide it into 20 different pages. Let's start with Page 1.

When ChatGPT generates a response for the first page, you can get subsequent responses by typing Page 2, Page 3, and so on.

You can also try generating responses in chapters instead of pages to get responses in different sections.

Method 2: Initially request an outline and then additional information.

If the aforementioned techniques are ineffective, you can expedite the process of obtaining larger responses by requesting that ChatGPT create an outline for a topic you wish to write about. When the AI tool shares an outline, you can duplicate the first subheading and request that ChatGPT construct a detailed section on this subheading. After each response, you can input the subsequent subheadings into the tool and request that it generate and create text for that section individually.

To get started, you can generate an outline from ChatGPT using the following prompt:

Create an outline on <topic> with subheadings. Here, replace <topic> with the subject you want to write on.

ChatGPT will now respond with an outline as you requested.

When it does so, you can prompt it to generate text for <this section> where you paste the first subheading from the outline shared in ChatGPT’s previous response.

You can then generate new text for various subheadings one at a time until the end.

Method 3: Utilise Summary

If you do not want ChatGPT to generate lengthier and more detailed responses, you can prevent its responses from being cut off by instructing the AI tool to generate brief summaries on the topics you specify. This is useful if you want ChatGPT to generate brief texts that you can use to fill in portions of an original post, article, or essay that do not require extensive content.

Since brief summaries utilise fewer tokens, ChatGPT responses will not be cut off in the middle of a paragraph, and you will be able to generate complete responses without truncation.

Can you bypass ChatGPT’s response limit?

Yes and no. If you have a free OpenAI account to use ChatGPT, the maximum number of tokens that constitutes a question and its answer is 4,096 tokens since your account will have GPT-3.5 set as default. To bypass this limit, you must subscribe to ChatGPT+ which offers access to GPT-4 where you may get twice as much longer response than on GPT3.5. This is because GPT-4 supports up to 8,192 tokens, thus providing more room for adding inputs and generating relevant responses.

If you don’t wish to upgrade your account to ChatGPT+, there’s no other way to overcome the token limit. The limit exists to help OpenAI keep its operating costs from getting higher since longer responses require more computational power, meaning more money to run them.
