Hyderabad: Child marriage is still prevalent in many parts of India and rarely do cases get reported on the issue. Recently, a 15-year-old was being forcefully being married by her parents but the girl managed to stop it by calling the child helpline well on time.
The girl who is a class 10 student was to give her last exam but her parents refused to let her go for the exam as it was her wedding day. The girl was being married to a 21-year-old boy at 11:20 am on the same day.
However, she called the child helpline number 109 two hours before the scheduled time of her marriage. This brave act of the girl was lauded by everyone.
Child welfare authorities and the officials of She Team from Rachakonda police reached the spot in an hour to stop the marriage. Also local child right activist Achyuta Rao got to know about the issue and alerted the police.
She said in a statement “We quickly alerted the police and were able to rescue her. She told us that she is interested in studying but her parents were against it.” The groom was a close relative of the girl’s family.
When they reached confusion was created over the girl’s age as the parents said that she was not a minor but official documents from school records claimed otherwise.
The parents of the girl were produced before the Mandal Revenue Officer and were warned against repeating the crime. Inspector M Mahesh informed, “The girl’s parents claimed that they were having health issues and wanted to get her married before they die.”
The girl has been rescued and sent to a shelter home.
