Hyderabad: Congress leaders Hanumantha Rao, Harsha Kumar arrested for attempting to install Ambedkar's statue

Two Congress leaders and their supporters were detained on June 16 when they were allegedly trying to install a statue of BR Ambedkar at Punjagutta Centre. The duo was arrested in the wee hours of Tuesday morning and taken into custody by the Punjagutta Police.

Rao had spent Rs 5 lakh on the statue and erected at Punjagutta Centre as he believed that Ambedkar was ignored by the Telangana government during the bifurcation.

He has now stated that if the Ambedkar statue does not get erected, then the statue of YS Rajasekhar Reddy that is present at the spot will be demolished.

The controversy began earlier on April 14, when a broken statue of Ambedkar was found in a municipality garbage after authorities seized it from the activists who tried to erect it near Panjagutta circle beside the YS Rajashekar Reddy statue.

Since then, Dalit activists and organisations including V Hanumantha Rao have been  protesting, demanding the installation of the statue at the same place. A case has also been registered with regard to the incident under Section 427 of the IPC and relevant sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act
