Detained for low attendance, engineering student attempts to kill self

Hyderabad:  A fourth-year student pursuing engineering at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad (JNTUH) attempted to kill self in college premises after he was detained for low attendance.

The varsity authorities will allow those to sit for their exams whose attendance is more than 75 per cent, the student of and detained the remaining. However, the attendance of the student detained stood at 55 per cent.

As he was depressed over it, he protested at the college along with other students demanding to allow them to write the exam. According to The Hans India, after the authorities turned down their demand, the student poured petrol on him and tried to set himself on fire. However, other students intervened and foiled his attempt.

The student was later shifted to the campus health centre and then to the police station.

Principal Sai Baba Reddy said that the list of the detained students will be uploaded on the official website and it cannot be changed.
