A 37-year-old IAS officer, Shailja Sharmaa, who is currently posted in Bihar and hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district has accused her husband of breaking into her house and trying to strangle her and her father.

On the basis of her complaint, police registered an offence against her husband, Rajeev Nayan, a senior Haryana government official, and subsequently arrested him.

The bureaucrat in her complaint at New Mandi police station said that on July 31, she came to her house in Muzaffarnagar. The following day, her husband, Rajeev Nayan, allegedly barged into her house after breaking the door and started abusing her family. Sharma claimed that he attacked her family and tried to strangle her when her father asked him to stop.

She also levelled allegations of harassment against her husband and accused him of having an extramarital affair.

Based on Sharma’s complaint, police have booked Nayan under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 352 (punishment for assault or criminal force otherwise than or grave provocation, 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the IPC and 66 of the IT Act.

The Deputy Superintendent of Police (New Mandi) Dhananjay Kushwaha speaking to TOI, said that “The accused is a regional labour commissioner in Harayana government’s labour department and is posted in Gurugram. He has been arrested and sent to jail.”

The DSP added that the case is being investigated and suitable action will be taken as per the findings of the investigation.

Sharma is currently serving as joint secretary in the Bihar government’s road construction department. In February, she was honoured with the e-commerce award in Mumbai.
