Independence Day 2020: Important facts about Tiranga you must know

The Independence Day of India is celebrated religiously throughout the country every year. India will celebrate its 74th Independence this year.

The Prime Minister of India unfurls India’s flag and holds a speech at the Red Fort in Old Delhi. Flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural programs are held in the state capitals often involving many schools and organizations. However, this year due to ongoing pandemic the celebration will be limited.

On 15 August 1947, when the first Prime Minister of independent India Pandit  Jawaharlal Nehru, hoisted the national flag at the Lahori Gate of Red Fort in New Delhi, the Father of the Nation Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi fasted in Calcutta (now Kolkata). He is believed to have spent his time praying, fasting, spinning, and silently protesting the sectarian hatred that had taken over the country.

Here are some important facts about Tiranga you must know:

  • The Indian National flag is based on the Swaraj flag, a flag of the Indian National Congress designed by Pingali Venkayya.
  • The ratio of the width of the flag to its length is 2:3.
  • The national flag of India was adopted in its present form during a meeting of the Constituent Assembly held on 22 July 1947, when it became the official flag of the Dominion of India.
  • The National Flag of India, by law, is to be made of khadi, a special type of hand-spun cloth of cotton or silk made popular by Mahatma Gandhi.
  • Bhikaji Rustom Cama was the first Indian who raised the flag on foreign soil.
  • During the period of Indian independence, several other designs of the Indian flag were used and adopted.
  • The first Indian flag had religious symbols and eight roses on it with Vande Matram written in the middle. It was hoisted on August 7, 1906, at Parsi Bagan Square in Kolkata.
  • Bal Gangadhar Tilak used a different type of flag in the year 1917. The flag had the Union Jack on the top left and Crescent on the top right corner. It also had seven stars.
  • Indian National Flag was designed by Pingali Venkayya who was a freedom fighter from Andhra Pradesh.
