Independent journalist Rizwana Tabassum commits suicide in UP’s Varanasi; SP leader arrested

Nomani was taken into police custody for interrogation on Monday night and Tabassum's body was sent for post-mortem. SSP's PRO Sanjay Tripathi on Tuesday said that the SP leader had been formally arrested.

Varanasi: 28-year-old freelance journalist Rizwana Tabassum has committed suicide in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh on Monday.

A suicide note has been found in the room in which she has accused a local youth leader, an FIR has been filed against a local leader Shamim Nomani in Lohta police station. The police reportedly said that body has been sent for postmortem.

According to Varanasi Sadar CO, Abhishek Pandey, a case has been registered against Lohta resident, Shamim Nomani on the charge of abetment of suicide under Section 306 on Rizwana’s father complaint.

Police said that Rizwana has left a note at her house by writing ‘Shamim Nomani is responsible’. On the condition of anonymity, a friend of Rizwana told that Shamim and Rizwana had a friendship for a long time but no one is aware of what happened suddenly.

Nomani was taken into police custody for interrogation on Monday night and Tabassum’s body was sent for post-mortem. SSP’s PRO Sanjay Tripathi on Tuesday said that the SP leader had been formally arrested.

The post mortem report of Tabassum had confirmed death by hanging, the PRO further said.

When they knocked the door around 9 o’clock, there was no sound, after which they got nervous. Then the police was informed about the incident. When the police broke the door, Rizwana’s body was hanging on the noose.

Rizwana’s father said that on the basis of what he found on the note, he has lodged an FIR.

“She never told about anything nor did she have any enmity with anyone. She was a good daughter as well as a good journalist”, said her father.

Rizwana used to work as a freelance journalist and contribute to TheWire, BBC Hindi, Khabar Laheria and other news portals. She has completed Mass Communication from BHU’s Rajiv Gandhi campus, Barkachha.
