Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has tested positive for COVID-19.

Haryana Assembly Speaker Gian Chand Gupta tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday, Health Minister Anil Vij confirmed. “The Assembly Speaker and two other MLAs have tested positive for coronavirus,” Anil Vij, who is also the state’s Home Minister, told PTI.

Notably, the Speaker has tested positive two days before the monsoon session of the Assembly starts on August 26. As a result, Deputy Speaker Ranbir Gangwa will be presiding over the House proceedings.

To address the leadership issue and decide if the Gandhis will continue to lead, a key Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting will take place today amid indications that its interim president Sonia Gandhi might offer to quit. After 23 Congress leaders wrote to Sonia Gandhi seeking to revamp, sources on Sunday said she might offer to step down in the CWC and ask the party to look for a full-time president. AICC media chief Randeep Surjewala, however, denied it. As the news of the letter spread, several leaders, including many MPs, wrote to Sonia Gandhi, either calling for her to continue or urging Rahul Gandhi to take charge.

UGC Guidelines 2020: The Supreme Court is likely to announce its final verdict on the petitions challenging the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines issued on July 6 exams before September 30 soon. In the last hearing held on August 18, the Supreme Court has reserved its judgment and had asked all the parties to file written submissions, if any, within a period of 3 days. This is now complete and it is expected that the court will now give its verdict.

In a shocking incident, a 16-year-old girl was sexually assaulted multiple times by her 35-year-old relative in Maharashtra’s Pune during the lockdown. The matter came to fore after the doctors in August confirmed that she is 18 weeks pregnant, police said.

A Chinese health official said on Sunday that China has approved the usage of its domestically developed but “unapproved” coronavirus vaccine for emergency use. The Chinese coronavirus vaccine would be used among people who are at high risk of getting infected in a limited period.
