In the most violent clash in decades between two nuclear-armed nations, India and China, in the Galwan valley, at least 20 Indian soldiers were killed, as per the reports.

While the Commanding Officer of 16 Bihar Regiment, Colonel Bikumalla Santosh Babu, and two soldiers were martyred on the night of June 15 itself, 17 others later succumbed to their injuries sustained in the clash that took place in sub-zero temperature on the hilly terrain.

Among the martyred soldiers, 12 hailed from Bihar. Health Minister Mangal Pandey, paying homage to the 20 martyred soldiers, expressed grief over China’s cowardly act and said the martyrdom of martyrs will not go in vain. He also said that the state government along with central government are with the families in the hour of crisis.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said the last rites of the martyrs would be done with police honour.

“Like every Indian, people of Bihar too are angry over the loss of 20 soldiers in Ladakh. China is rattled by India’s strong fight with Covid-19 and resolve to become self-reliant,” Modi said in a statement.

State Parliamentary Affairs and Rural Development Minister Shravan Kumar also paid homage to the mortal remains of Bihar’s martyred soldier  Sunil Kumar. Kumar, on Wednesday, was present at Jai Prakash Narayan Airport in Patna to receive the soldier’s body.

Bihar Regiment battalions have actively taken part in all of India’s post-independence wars and won several medals and awards for their bravery during the wars. Since the 1965-1971 battle with Pakistan, the soldiers of the Bihar Regiment have shown their bravery in the Kargil War. On the foundation day, the Chief of the Army Staff has conferred the President’s Mark, to the Bihar Regiment Centre at Danapur, which is among the largest cant area in the country. Among the 17 soldiers who were martyred in the URI terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, 15 belonged to the Bihar Regiment.

Army officers and soldiers of the regiment have won more than 350 medals for their outstanding service in the Indian army. Bihar has received 3 Ashoka Chakras, 15 Veer Chakras, 41 Shaurya Chakras, 14 Kirti Chakras, 8 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals, 5 War Service Medals, 31 Vishisht Seva Medals, 3 Life-Saving Medals, and 153 Seva Medals.
