New Delhi, Feb 28 (IANS) India has given specific information about Jaish-e-Mohammad to all 15 members of United Nations Security Council even as the US, the UK and France having moved a fresh proposal there to designate the Pakistan-based terror group’s chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist.
Government sources said here on Thursday that a decision to designate Azhar a global terrorist will build pressure on Pakistan.
They said his designation as a global terrorist was not “be all and end all” but will send a message to Islamabad that no one was on their side.
The JeM has claimed responsibility for the Pulwama terror attack in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed.
The fresh proposal was moved on Wednesday by the three veto-wielding members and the Security Council Sanctions Committee will have 10 working days to consider it.
China, a veto-wielding permanent member of the Security Council, had been blocking earlier proposals to name Azhar a global terrorist. The sources said they have information that other Security Council members are trying to convince it not to block the fresh proposal.
The sources said that India has also given Pakistan a large dossier about the activities of JeM and it was for Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to walk the talk on terror.
They said Pakistan needs to create a conducive atmosphere for talks by taking immediate credible and verifiable action against cross-border terrorism emanating from its soil and terrorist proxies.
They said specific details of camps and information about members has been shared and the ball was in its court as the evidence it was talking about has been given.
The sources said that India was ready to carry forward the dialogue concerning Kartarpur Corridor despite the strain in ties following the Pulwama terror attack and subsequent escalation of tensions.
India had on Thursday briefed members of the Security Council about Pakistan’s effort to target Indian military installations through air strikes.
Sources said that international community has appreciated India’s stand on counter-terrorism as part of which it had targeted a JeM terror camp in Pakistan. They said the narrative was back on counter-terrorism despite Pakistan’s efforts at war-mongering.
They said India had told the international community that it was Pakistan which escalated matters by targeting military installations and what India did was counter-terrorism action as Pakistan had not shown any inclination to act against terrorists and their proxies after the February 14 Pulwama attack and the claim by the JeM.
The sources said that at 9.45 a.m. on Wednesday, a sizeable force of Pakistan Air Force jets – over 20 in number – approached the Indian air space. Some crossed the Line of Control (LoC) and launched laser-guided bombs. Their target was military installations but they missed narrowly because they could not come closer.
This, the sources said, happened against the backdrop of Imran Khan’s claim that Pakistan wanted to show its strength but it was false because their actual target was military installations.
Imran Khan said on Thursday that Islamabad’s action was intended to convey that if India can come into Pakistan, then Pakistan can do the same.
The sources said that there was deliberate effort by Pakistan to create a war psychosis by shutting its airspace and informing foreign embassies that India would launch missiles and also that there could be attack by the sea.
He said India conducted a targeted operation at a venue where fidayeen jihadis were being trained and there were no civilian casualties.
On Khan’s demand for actionable intelligence, the sources said India had considered giving it but felt there will be no use given that Pakistan had not acted on the detailed information given after the terror attacks on Mumbai and the Pathankot IAF base — even after a Pakistani team was given access.
