India likely to cross the psychological mark of 1L COVID-19 cases, death toll crosses 3000

India records highest single-day spike of 29,429 cases

As per the Union Health Ministry report on Monday, India has recorded the biggest single-day jump of 5,242 new coronavirus cases, with the total cases hitting 96,169, including 3,029 deaths. India is likely to cross 1 lakh COVID-19 cases psychological mark.

India had eased its lockdown rules from May 4 and had even allowed migrant workers to travel back to their homes, a decision that has resulted in lakhs of people being on the move for the last two weeks. Migrant workers continued to increase in states like Bihar and Odisha, which are among the fastest-growing right now.

Meanwhile, India has joined a total of 61 countries to support a joint resolution drafted by the European Union (EU) and Australia calling for an ‘impartial’ evaluation of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) response to the coronavirus pandemic. As per reports, the draft resolution has been presented to the World Health Assembly (WHA) which will take up the issue of ‘COVID-19 Response’ during the two-day meet, starting Monday.

  • Worldwide, 47,14,240 people have coronavirus. 3,15,191 lakh people have died. As per the real-time tally by Johns Hopkins University, the US, hardest hit by coronavirus, has nearly 90,000 coronavirus deaths.
  • Delhi’s coronavirus cases crossed the 10,000-mark, with 721 cases in the last 24 hours. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the centre’s guidelines on the lockdown were “largely in line with the proposal sent by the Delhi government”. He said the state government will give a detailed plan for the capital today.
  • India’s COVID-19 recovery rate, stood at 38.29 percent on Monday. 36,824 people have recovered, the Health Ministry said.
  • Of the total cases in the country, Maharashtra accounts for the highest number of cases, followed by Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Delhi. The coronavirus cases in the state crossed the 33,000-mark as it reported 2,347 new cases in a single day.
  • The centre has made it clear that only essential activities shall be allowed in containment zones. It has allowed buses and other vehicles to run. But flights, metro services, malls, gyms, cinemas and big gatherings are prohibited.
  • Tamil Nadu has witnessed a rise in the number of coronavirus cases in the last 24  hours, with 639 new cases, taking the state’s tally to 11,224. Authorities say that so far, 174 people who returned to the state by flights and trains have tested positive, and this trend could be a worry for the state. A vegetable market in Chennai alone accounts for 2,600 cases.
  • In Madhya Pradesh, 24 passengers who arrived at the Indore airport from Kuwait have tested positive for the highly contagious virus. The state has 4,977 cases, including 248 deaths.
  • In Bihar, 1070 migrant workers have returned to Bihar from Delhi on Monday. 24% out of these workers have been found coronavirus positive. 
  • The total number of COVID-19 cases in Assam rose to 100, with five people in Guwahati, a student who returned from Delhi, a nine-year-old child in Jorhat, and another person in Silchar testing positive on Sunday.
  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled the fifth and final tranche of the government’s Rs 20 lakh crore economic relief package. She announced a big boost in spending on the MNREGA scheme, an upped borrowing limit for states, more relaxations for private players, and big changes for health and education sectors.
