International Civil Aviation Day 2021: In 1996, the United Nations General Assembly gave a nod to the official observance of International Civil Aviation Day on 7 December. On the 50th anniversary of the Convention of the International Civil Aviation, ICAO celebrated the first Civil Aviation Day. The ICAO started to celebrate this day on 7 December 1994. The ICAO is an autonomous United Nations body responsible for maintaining the safety standards and protocols of international aviation. This day is not a public holiday, it is an international observance.

The purpose of this day is to highlight the importance of the International Civil Aviation Organization. The day is observed to commemorate and generate worldwide consciousness about the contribution of international civil aviation to socio-economic development.

International Civil Aviation Day 2021: Theme of this year

Every year International Civil Aviation Day has a different theme to highlight a particular issue or bring into light an ongoing situation. The theme also projects the vision or goal of the International Civil Aviation Organization, also helps people connect with the insight and perspectives of ICAO.

The theme for International Civil Aviation Day 2021 is “Advancing Innovation for Global Aviation Development.” Also, the council has decided to keep the same theme till the year 2023.

International Civil Aviation Day 2021: History and significance

Dating back to the year 1996, the United Nations along with the recommendations of the Canadian government, gave a formal recognition to celebrate International Civil Aviation Day on 7 December. The UN and world nations have now adopted the Agenda 2030 and embarked on the journey to create a new era in global sustainable development. The importance of aviation is quite evident in terms of global connectivity. It also goes along with Chicago Convention’s objectives to look to international flight as a fundamental part of global peace, prosperity, and connectivity.

ICAO gets support and proper acknowledgment from the government, organizations, companies, and even the people. ICAO celebrates this day with lots of enthusiasm and fervor. It organizes various sessions, seminars, conferences, events, activities for this day. It helps in educating people about the working mechanism of civil aviation. Also, ICAO shares new announcements and relevant information related to the sector of civil aviation.

About ICAO:

ICAO was established on 7th December 1944, in the interest of securing international cooperation and consistency in civil aviation matters. During the same year, the International Services Transit Agreement and the International Air Transport Agreement were also signed. In 1994, ICAO initiated International Civil Aviation Day to recognize its 50th anniversary.

This observance was made to generate and leverage global awareness of the value of international civil aviation in the social and economic development of the countries.

ICAO is a United Nations (UN) body that operates in association with other United Nations members including the World Meteorological Organization, the International Telecommunication Union, the Universal Postal Union, the World Health Organization, and the International Maritime Organization.
