The association of IPS officers condemned the statement made by Bharatiya Janata Party candidate for Bhopal Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur that senior police officer Hemant Karkare had died because he had been “cursed” due to his investigation into the 2008 Malegaon blast case.
In the tweet, the IPS Association said, “Ashok Chakra awardee late Sri Hemant Karkare, IPS made the supreme sacrifice fighting terrorists. Those of us in uniform condemn the insulting statement made by a candidate and demand that sacrifices of all our martyrs be respected.”

The association’s statement came after Sadhvi Pragya, an accused in the Malegaon blast, cursed Karkare for treating her “very badly” while she was in custody.”Hemant Karkare falsely implicated me. He died of his karma. I told him, he will be destroyed. I told him his entire dynasty will be erased,” Pragya said.
Reacting on the remark, said that “Pragya Thakur’s statement is her personal opinion, which she may have said because of the years-long physical and mental torture she faced. But the party considers # Hemant Karkare a martyr.”
Karkare was the chief of Mumbai Anti-Terrorist Squad. He reached Cama Hospital and boarded a jeep with Kamte and Salaskar after which they received information about a terrorist’s car. When they found the terrorists an encounter erupted. Karkare’ gun fell down during the firing and later he lost his life. He was posthumously honoured with Ashoka Chakra.
