Schools shut while Run For Children flagged off in Delhi despite severe air pollution

At a time when Delhi government announced to shut schools to protect kids from noxious air in the national capital, a marathon named ‘Run for Children’ was organised on the occasion of Children’s Day – Jawahar Lal Nehru’s birth anniversary.

The hazardous air quality prompted the authorities to take ‘air emergency’ action and ordered the schools to shut till Friday, however, this event on the occasion of Children’s Day made the netizens furious. Scores of children were seen running at Vinay Marg in Chanakyapuri, the area filled with dust pollutants in the morning today.

The event was reportedly organised by an NGO Prayas which was founded by former DGP Amod Kanth in 1988, for the betterment of disenfranchised and distressed children in India.

Many on Twitter questioned the NGO’s decision to go ahead with the event to mark Children’s Day.

Delhi sky continues to be smoky grey as air quality slips into ‘severe’

Smog resulting from raging farm fires and unfavourable weather conditions led to the air quality in the national capital dip to a ‘severe’ category on November 13.

Manish Sisodia said that the government has decided to shut all the government schools and private schools in the national capital tomorrow and the day after tomorrow.

The Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA) also extended the restrictions on dirty-fuel based industries in Delhi-NCR, hot mix plants and stone crushers till the morning of November 15, as the meteorological department said strong winds are expected from November 15, which will bring down the air pollution levels to the very poor category.
