The coronavirus lockdown in several parts of the world has helped people discover the chef or cook inside themselves. During the early stage of the lockdown, Dalgona coffee became trendy and social media got swamped with recipes.

Recently, Monkey bread is trending on social media and people are going bananas. Across the globe, people are baking this bread and posting the pictures along with their recipes on their social media handles.

What is Monkey Bread?

Monkey bread is a soft, sweet, sticky pastry served in the United States for breakfast or as a treat. It consists of pieces of soft-baked dough sprinkled with cinnamon.

The origin of the term “monkey bread” comes from the pastry being a finger food, the consumer would pick apart the bread as a monkey would.

“Monkey bread” soon became the more common name for this Hungarian Jewish dessert. Recipes for the bread first appeared in American women’s magazines and community cookbooks in the 1950s, but the dish is still virtually unknown outside the United States.

Monkey Bread Recipe:

Ingredients:

For the dough:

  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened.
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water.
  • 1 tablespoon yeast.
  • 2 tablespoons sugar.
  • 1 tablespoon salt.
  • 4 cups flour, more or less as needed

For the cinnamon topping:

  • 1 cup brown sugar.
  • 2 tsp cinnamon.
  • ½ cup butter, melted.

Method:

  • Prepare a bundt pan by coating generously with butter, then set aside.
  • In a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, dissolve the yeast and sugar in the warm water and let stand for five minutes until foamy. Add the two tablespoons of softened butter, salt, and three cups of flour and mix until combined.
  • Add additional flour, ¼-cup at a time, until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl and is only slightly sticky to the touch. Knead three to five minutes until smooth. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 350. In a small bowl, whisk together the brown sugar and cinnamon and set aside. Gently punch the dough down and pat into a large square. Cut into 64 equal pieces using a pizza cutter, that’s four quarters, each cut into 16 pieces. Roll each piece of dough into a ball and dip in the melted butter, then roll in the cinnamon-sugar mixture and place in the prepared bundt pan.
  • Repeat with remaining dough, then cover and let rise for 30 minutes. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the top is deep brown. Let cool for five minutes, then invert onto a platter. Serve warm.
