Oceania’s Isabel Province is a province of the Solomon Islands with a population of approximately 35,000. Santa Isabel Island is home to Buala, the capital of Isabel Province. Due to a lack of adequate infrastructure such as roads, bridges, contemporary medical care, and hotels, Isabel Province does not receive a large number of visitors. Isabel Province Day is a day to honour Isabel Province and increase global awareness of the province and its residents.
Isabel Province Day 2023: History
The Spanish explorer lvaro de Mendaa was the first European to disembark in the Solomon Islands archipelago and Isabel Province on February 7, 1568. It was then charted as Santa Isabel de la Estrella, which translates to Saint Elizabeth of Bethlehem’s Star. After establishing a settlement, the Spaniards constructed a vessel to survey and chart the surrounding sea and islands.
Maestre de Campo Pedro Ortega Valencia and Alférez Hernández Enrquez lead local explorations that resulted in the discovery of Malaita, Savo, Guadalcanal, Makira, Vangunu, Malaupaina, Choiseul, Ulawa, Ali’ite, Malaulalo, and Ugi Island. The relationship between the Spanish and the Solomon Islanders deteriorated gradually as the Spanish’s need for fresh food and water could no longer be satisfied by the Solomon Islanders’ subsistence economy. This subsequently led to tension and conflict among the populace. Due to a lack of food and gold, as well as attacks and disease, the Spaniards abandoned their settlement on Santa Isabel and relocated their colony. Blackbirding, or the hijacking or forced recruitment of labourers for sugar plantations in Queensland and Fiji, was a recurrent threat to the inhabitants of Santa Isabel Island.
In April 1885, Germany began protecting the North Solomon Islands, which included Isabel Province. In 1899, Germany transferred the majority of the North Solomon Islands, including Isabel province, to the British Solomon Islands Protectorate in exchange for the British relinquishing their claims to Samoa under the terms of the Treaty of Berlin.
