Jawaani Jaaneman review: Saif Ali Khan rocks in this quirky comedy but we crave more for Tabu

This week’s release is a comedy starring Saif Ali Khan and newbie Aalia F in the lead roles. Jawaani Jaaneman helmed by Nitin Kakkar is about a 40-something single man, high on life, finds out that he has a 21-year-old daughter. Not just that she is also pregnant. The film is a story about how that free-spirited man who is in no mood to leave the free life will stand up for her daughter?

Director Nitin Kakkar wastes no time in unraveling this quirky plot much of which is revealed in the trailer, but the film still has its moments. The first half is snappy and quite a riot as we are introduced to Jazz’s (Saif Ali Khan) uber-cool life. It is marked by wild partying and hooking up with girls half his age.

Debutante Alaya F is confident as a young girl trying to reunite with her father against all odds. This new talent definitely shows promise and potential. There is no melodrama that is offered to her character and that is the reason it makes you connect with her emotionally.

Apart from the lead actor’s performances, Tabu in a hippie avatar is what one would love to see but what disappoints is not her acting but the less screentime given to her. Watching her play the role of a hippie makes you want to see more of her but the films fail to use a talented actor like her.

Among the supporting cast, actress Kubbra Sait has a stunning screen presence. Her character of a young divorced woman looking for a mature relationship is bound to resonate with many. Farida Jalal, Chunky Panday, and Kumud Mishra also lend good support.

Overall, the film is entertaining in the first half but the flow drops in the second half of the film as it meanders towards predictable and slightly preachy parts.

What works for the film is that undoubtedly it has shown all the shades and emotion which makes it a package film to go and watch this weekend. If not for anything else, go for Saif and Tabu.
