New Delhi: As per Bar & Bench reports, another group of parents has moved the Supreme Court to prevent further postponement of the engineering and medical entrance exams, JEE Main and NEET 2020. However, this is the second such petition. In early August, a group of parents from Gujarat similarly petitioned the Supreme Court to make sure the exams are held.
Following the petition filed by the 11 students from 11 states in Supreme Court on August 6 demanding that the JEE Main and NEET 2020 be postponed to December, however, now another PIL case has been filed by the parents asking not to further delay the exams.
The group who were demanding postponement also wrote to the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Education requesting them to consider postponing. The case will be heard on August 17.
The exam dates already been revised in the wake of surging COVID-19 cases across India. The National Testing Agency (NTA) issued the last exam dates in July. The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main is now slated from September 1-6 and the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET), on September 13.
Nearly, 25 lakh applicants have registered to write them.
In the past few weeks, the debate about postponing NEET and JEE Main 2020 has been intense. Those in favor of postponing believe that writing exams during the pandemic put their lives at risk. The petitioners argued that some states do not have enough test centers and they are worried about the safety of transportation facilities inside and outside the test centers.
Those who oppose the postponement of exams believe that they have spent many years preparing for these exams and that their careers are threatened. If the exams are held now, it is still possible to save the academic year.
They have argued that “every delay at any stage of the admission process will have a direct and adverse impact upon the academic year of the students”, reports Bar & Bench.
Meanwhile, according to NTA’s statements when issuing the time table, the NTA is expected to issue the JEE Main admit card as soon as possible.
