Ranchi: The Congress MLA from Jamtara Irfan Ansari on Friday wrote a letter to Jharkhand CM Hemat Soren demanding lockdown free Shravani Mela which takes place in Baidyanath Mandir, Deoghar every year.

The Congress legislator wrote in his letter that every year lakhs of devotees gather at temple and the prayer takes place but this year due to coronavirus there is severe uncertainty about the Sharavani Mela.

He urged to CM that by keeping social distance the Sharavani Mela can take place this year too.

He further added that at the time of Mela, an average of 1.5 lakh people pass through this path. If a Kanvariya spends three hundred rupees a day, the amount is Rs. 4, 000 crores. This amount goes into the pockets of local businessmen. The account is that if the Kanwar yatra is not there, the traders in the locality will lose more than Rs. 100 crores.

Ansari added that, keeping in mind about the coronavirus crisis, the situation can be handled by maintaining social distance and thus if the mela is free from lockdown that will help in economic stability too.

This year, the Shravani Mela will begin on July 5 and is expected to continue till August 3. Around 1.5 lakh devotees are involved in the Kanwar Yatra of about 100 kms between Sultanganj to Deoghar.

The preparations of the mela begins with taking care of roads, drinking water, medical, electricity and security that is provided by the Government.

Local people put up shops. In tents or houses, the kanvarias facilitate night rest. Usually, preparations begin two months ago.
