The Jawaharlal Nehru University students will be paying the highest hostel fees among the top 10 central universities in India.

According to an analysis The Indian Express did on top 10 central universities based on their National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) performance — JNU’s old hostel fee structure was not the lowest among the country’s best CUs.

The analysis was done over 10 universities – JNU; Banaras Hindu University (BHU); Hyderabad Central University (HCU); Aligarh Muslim University (AMU); Jamia Millia Islamia; Delhi University; Tezpur University; Visva-Bharati University; Northeastern Hill University (NEHU); and Pondicherry University.

According to the report, Visva-Bharati University, HCU, AMU, NEHU and Pondicherry University charged less for the same facility.

JNU students have been protesting against the hike in the university’s hostel fee. The new fee chart includes service charges — for maintenance, mess workers, cook and sanitation.

Under the new hostel charges, students have to pay an approximate service charge of Rs 1,700 per month. Rent for a single room was increased 30 folds from Rs 20 per month to Rs 600 per month, and for a double-sharing room from Rs 10 per month to Rs 300 per month.

Students will also have to pay utility charges (electricity and water), which they did not have to so far.

In a subsequent announcement, the students from BPL household will now have to pay Rs 300 as room rent for a single occupancy room and Rs 150 as room rent for a double occupancy room.
