JNU students protest against CAA, NRC at Jantar Mantar

New Delhi, Feb 17 (IANS) Around 50 students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) gathered at Jantar Mantar on Monday to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The protestors were expecting a huge turnout so that they could march from Mandi House to Parliament but as the organisers failed to bring in the crowd, the march was called off and the students reached Jantar Mantar to register their protest.

They also demanded release of Sharjeel Imam, who has been arrested on sedition charges last month, and Kafeel Khan, who has been booked under the National Security Act (NSA) for his speech during an anti-CAA protest at Aligarh Muslim University on December 12.

The protest was led by JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh and vice-president Saket Moon.

The protestors raised slogans like, “CAA hatao desh bachao” (Remove CAA and save country) along with play cards demanding release of Kafeel Khan and Sharjeel Imam.

Addressing the gathering, JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh said, “If someone raises issues against the Citizenship Amendment Act, the National Register of Citizens and the National Population Register, they are being slapped with sedition case, while ministers roam around freely despite giving hate speeches.”
