Kajari Teej 2020: Date, Shubh Muhurat, Puja Vidhi, and Significance of Satudi Teej

Teej is widely celebrated by married women across Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Rajasthan. The festival is a three-day-long Hindu festival that celebrates the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

In 2020, Haryali Teej took place on July 23, Kajari Teej on August 6, and Hartalika Teej on August 21.

Kajari Teej, also known as Kajali Teej, is widely celebrated all over India. This Hindu festival is celebrated in the lunar month of Bhadrapada on the 3rd day of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha). As per the Gregorian calendar, Kajari Teej usually falls in August or July.

Subh Muhurat of Kajari Teej:

Date: August 6

Puja starts: 10:50 PM

Puja ending timing: 12:14 AM (August 7)

Kajari Teej Puja Vidhi:

  • Rice, vermillion (sindoor) and sprinkling water is offered to the Goddess
  • With the help of henna and vermillion, 13 dots each are made using the ring finger while 13 dots are made by kohl using the ring finger
  • Then, clothes, kohl and henna are offered after offering the sacred thread to the Goddess
  • The wall is then decorated with the sacred thread using the dots marked on it.
  • Next to this, fruits are offered to the Goddess. On the Puja Kalash, devotees tie the sacred thread around the kalash (sacred vessel) and put a Tilak with vermillion on it
  • In the light of the Diya (earthen lamp) which is placed beside the pond, women need to look at the nose pin, neem twig, cucumber, and lemon in the light of the lamp (Diya). After that offering Arghya to Moon is performed.

Significance of  Kajari Teej:

The Kajari festival is also known as Satudi Teej and Bundi Teej in some specific regions. While Hariyali Teej is known as Choti Teej, this is known as Badi Teej. However, this festival also holds a similar significance for married women. As per the Hindu beliefs, it is believed that fasting on Kajari Teej blesses the women with immense bliss and happiness in their married life.

Rituals of Kajari Teej:

  • For the longevity and good fortune of the husbands, the married women observe a Kajari Teej fast. Unmarried girls also observe this fast to get blessed with a good husband. Women break the fast by worshipping the Moon and some worship the Neem tree to conclude the fast.
  • On this day, Sattu is prepared with rice, gram, wheat, and barley.
  • On Kajari Teej, it is significant to worship cows. It is essential to feed the holy cows first with small chapatis which are made up of wheat flour with some ghee and jaggery. After this ritual, the devotees can consume food.
  • The Hindu women enjoy the festival by singing and dancing on folk songs and by decorating the house with beautiful swings
  • One more essential aspect of this day is the songs. Accompanied by the blissful beats of drums, individuals of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh sing various Kajari Teej songs.
