Kamal Nath, one of the seniormost faces of Indian politics becomes the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. The politician would become Congress’ first Chief Minister in the state after more than 15 years. After a day filled with drama and an array of meetings in New Delhi, the top leadership of the Indian National Congress decided to go with the senior politician over his counterpart Jyotiaditya Scindia. The party has further decided to go without a Deputy Chief Minister.

Kamal Nath is the senior most Lok Sabha MP, a member since 1980. He has taken roles in various ministries over the years, such as Minister of Environment & Forests, (Union Minister of State) Textiles, General Secretary of the INC and Union Cabinet Minister of Commerce & Industry.

The election in Madhya Pradesh took place on 28 November while the vote counting of all the five elections took place on 11 December. Congress managed to bag 114 seats, two short of the majority number of 116.

Polling across all 230 Assembly seats in Madhya Pradesh occurred amid tight security. According to the Election Commission, over 65,000 polling stations were set up in the state, with special pink booths designated to encourage women, voters.
