Kapil Dev is clearly one of the biggest cricketing legends that have come out of India. 1983 World Cup-winning captain put Indian cricket in the spotlight when no one gave the subcontinent teams a chance. Kapil Dev was born on January 6, 1959, in Chandigarh, India. 

There are no two ways about the fact that Kapil Dev is the greatest all-rounder that has ever come out of India and these facts are proof of it.

Stats and Facts about Kapil Dev

  • Popularly knowns as ‘Haryana Hurricane’ he studied at DAV School, Chandigarh, and then completed high school at St. Edward School, Shimla. Since childhood, Kapil Dev had a lot of interest in cricket and all other sports. He played his first-ever match for the Haryana team in the year 1975 against Punjab and took 6 wickets for his side. 
  • He played his first international Test match against Pakistan in the year 1978.

  • Kapil Dev played a spectacular inning of 193 runs against Delhi on behalf of the Haryana team in the year 1979-1980. This was the first century of his career.
  • Later in the year 1979, he scored 126 runs in 124 balls with his first Test century against West Indies.
  • After leading India to two series wins against arch-rivals Pakistan, Dev was handed the mantle of the Indian captaincy in 1982-83 where he led his team to the 1983 World Cup trophy.

  • Kapil was honored with the Wisden cricketer of the year for his spectacular performance in the World Cup for the year 1983
  • For his significant contribution to the world of Cricket Kapil Dev, has been conferred with a number of great honors including Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan on behalf of the Government of India.
  • In addition, Kapil Dev Ji has also been the coach of India from 1999 to about 2000.
  • In the year 2002, WC Winner was announced as Wisden’s Indian cricketer of the Century.

  • In the year 2010, Kapil Dev was honored with the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame Award.
  •  Kapil Dev’s name is also among the highest wicket-taker cricketers in the world. He is the only player who has taken more than 400 wickets in Test matches in his career and has scored 5000 runs.
  • Also, Kapil has never missed a Test match for India because of any kind of injury, and in those 184 innings that he played, he was never run-out. Exceptional for an all-rounder to maintain this kind of fitness, especially in that era.
