An Air India Express flight with 180 passengers on board en route from Dubai skidded off the runway while landing at Karipur Airport, Kozhikode on Friday evening, news channels reported.

The Air India Express flight was about to land at Kerala’s Kozhikode when the accident happened.

Eyewitness report that there was smoke at the location of the crash and the aircraft seems to have split into two parts.

Sources in the DGCA said “the aircraft overshot the runway, fell into a valley and broke up into two pieces. There are some survivors.”

According to local media reports, the aircraft skid from the runway into the nearby slip road as it landed during heavy rainfall.

The plane is believed to have overshot the runway after it landed—IX 1344—at the airport at around 7.40 pm.

Kozhikode airport is a tabletop airport. It had been raining heavily at the time of the incident.

The Director General of Civil Aviation said that the flight overshot the runway and fell into the slope beyond, breaking into two pieces.

The airline spokesperson said the aircraft apparently overshot the runway.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said police and firefighters have been directed to take all measures for rescue and relief operations.

This is a developing story, more reports are awaited.
