The state of Kerala was formed on November 1, 1956. It is situated in southern India and is known for its greenery. The state is nicknamed as ‘The god’s own country’. Kerala is the twenty-third largest Indian state by area. It is bordered by Karnataka to the north and northeast, Tamil Nadu to the east and south, and the Lakshadweep Sea to the west.

The state has witnessed significant emigration, especially to the Arab states of the Persian Gulf during the Gulf Boom of the 1970s and early 1980s, and its economy depends significantly on remittances from a large Malayali expatriate community. Hinduism is practised by more than half of the population, followed by Islam and Christianity.

Kerala Piravi marks the birth of the state of Kerala in India. Kerala, the state of India, was formed long after Indian independence on 15 August 1947. Prior to that date, it was three independent provinces named Malabar, Cochin and Travancore.

Prior to 1956, Kerala was made up of three distinct areas. Malabar, Cochin and Travancore.

Malabar forms the northern territories with Thalassery, is a small Cannanore and Kasaragod with a tiny pocket-handkerchief French possession of Mahe. This area belonged to what was once called the Madras Presidency under the British. The middle section is formed by the princely State of ‘Cochin’; the third, Southern territory, comprises ‘Travancore’, another princely state.

A popular movement known as Aikya Kerala (meaning united Kerala), for the formation of the State of Kerala, gave an impetus to the reorganisation of the state on a linguistic basis.
