Kerala: Government cracks down on 74 coconut oil brands

Thiruvananthapuram: Left Democratic Front led state government has banned 74 coconut oil brands after it was found adulterated during the test. State Food Safety Commissioner has issued an order which makes the manufacturing, storage, and selling of these brands illegal.

Food and Safety Commissioner Anand Singh has said that stocking and marketing of these banned coconut oils would be liable for punishment under this order.

As per reports, the Health Minister of Kerala KK Shylaja had instructed the food and safety department to step up the initiatives to ensure the prohibition of the sale of adulterated food items being sold in the state.

The latest crackdown is a result of the complaint after an investigation was carried out by a website and later it failed to pass the test and was found to be in violation of Food Safety and Standards Act 2006.

Interestingly, almost half of the banned brands of coconut oil have “Kera” suffix, a trick used by these brand to manipulate the consumers portraying to establish a link with Government-owned enterprise, KeraFed.

It’s not the first time, earlier on May 31, 2018, this year the authorities had banned 45 brands of coconut oil and later on June 30, 51 more brands were banned. With the ban on these 74 brands, a total of 170 brands of coconut oil have been banned in the state in 2018.
